Aché
A group who lived and foraged in the forests of eastern Paraguay but now can be found living in a number of settlements through out eastern Paraguay. Today the Aché are one of the most well-known foraging societies in the scientific and anthropological world, with a mass of published articles about their behavior and ecology.

Agta
several groups who historically were foragers on Eastern portion of the Island of Luzon in the Philippines. Today these groups trade for domesticated crops and also practice limited horticulture in various areas.

Ainu
The indigenous people of northern Japan.

Aka
A group living in the tropical forest regions of South Central Africa and north Congo-Brazzaville. They share a trading partner relationship with the Ngandu agriculturalists.

Aleut
A colloquial term encompassing various Arctic hunter-gatherer peoples occupying the circumpolar region of the earth.

Australian Aborigines
Refers to the numerous tribes of indigenous peoples of mainland Australia, Tasmania and the Torres Islands.

Baka
A group of Central African foragers living in the western Congo-Zaire river valley, and also Cameroon.

Bushmen
An old term referring to the foragers of Southern Africa.

Caribou Inuit
One of the Central Inuit societies, the Caribou Inuit had very early contact with traders and adventurers.

Copper Inuit
Located in the central northern coast of Canada, this is a Central Inuit group marked by a number of social structure peculiarities in contrast to other Inuit societies, yet a similar material culture.

Efé
A group of foragers living in the Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They engage in a trading partner relationship with the Lese agriculturalists.

Eskimo
A colloquial term encompassing various Arctic hunter-gatherer peoples occupying the circumpolar region of the earth.

Hadza (Hadzabe)
Groups of East Africa predating the Bantu movement into this region.

Hiwi
Located in the modern countries of Columbia and Venezuela.

Iglulik Eskimos (Iglulingmiut)
Originally inhabitants of northeastern Canada, this Central Inuit group is best known for a special emphasis on kayaking and forms of hunting from the water, even terrestrial animals like caribou.

Inuit
A division of Arctic Foragers inhabiting northern Alaska, Canada, and Greenland.

Ju/'hoansi
A distinct group of Southern African foragers.

Kwakiutl
An example of a more complex society centered on salmon fishing and processing.

Mbuti
The Mbuti live in small groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa.

Netsilik Eskimos (Netsilingmiut)
Inhabitants of the Arctic Coast of Canada, this Central Inuit group is one of the most studied, noted particularly for their practices of infanticide.

Northern Paiute
Group of Great Basin Indians of the southwestern United States.

Pygmy
A term declining in use, grouping together the foraging societies of Central Africa.

San
An overarching term relating to groups of Southern African foragers.

Selk'nam (Ona)
The "foot people" of Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego Islands who resided on the island for at least 1000 years until European contact decimated the population during the first half of the 20th Century.

Shoshone
Group of Great Basin Indians of the southwestern United States.

Southern Paiute
Group of Great Basin Indians of the southwestern United States.

Thule Inuit
Generally believed to be the progenitor culture of the Central Inuit and are more often spoken of in an archaeological context than modern-day ethnological work.

Tlingit
A group of the Northwest Coast Indians.

Ute
Group of Great Basin Indians of the southwestern United States.

Yahgan
The 19th century Yahgan or "canoe indians" of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego were the southernmost people in the world.

Yupik
A division of Arctic foragers inhabiting Alaska, Alaskan coastal zones, and areas of Russia including Siberia.
